As disappointing as the NC vote is, I choose to be an optimist that the world is changing.
40% of NC voters said No to Amendment One. That's 40% more than what we may have had a few decades ago.
Movements for equality take time, sometimes a generation This is a marathon, not a sprint. And we all needto keep on... keeping on.
Gay and lesbian folks should be equally outraged about the continuing epidemic of LGBT youth homelessness, cutbacks to vital funds needed for HIV medications to those that can't afford them, and the continued assault and murders of transgender women of color.
LGBT equality is also directly linked to the struggles for freedom and justice: economic inequality, the war on reproductive freedom, the military industrial complex and other movements fighting for justice.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.
Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
No movement for equality has ever won without coalitions and alliances with other justice seeking organizations and people of conscience.
We must seek out our allies and friends and work together to build the world that we want to live in.
